About Us
The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl is a competition designed by a former Georgia Media Specialist that encourages students to read the 20 books nominated each year for the Georgia Peach Book Award. Last year was Macon County's third time competing in the reading bowl, and we were very proud of the students' hard work and accomplishments.
Students who compete are asked to read a variety of books from the nominee list and become experts who are focused on specific details. Then they practice answering questions about the setting, plot, characters, and details. There are no questions in the reading bowl that ask you to interpret, discuss theme, identify symbolism, etc. This is comprehension and knowledge of basic facts about the books.
The regional competition is on February 9, 2019 at Putnam County Middle School in Eatonton, GA. All members are required to attend.
Again this year, the books on the nominee list promise to be exciting, interesting, and relative for teen readers of all backgrounds and interest types. Click the links below to read summaries, watch book trailer videos, and learn more about the competition.
